Uncle Chua & The Four Great Talents of Hong Kong
Uncle Chua (Chua Lam)‘s final letter before passing away. An era of Hong Kong has drawn to a close. My impressions of the Four Great Talents:
- Louis Cha (Jin Yong): The grandmaster. Never watched his interviews, but he felt like a very serious person—even the other talents treated dining with him with deep respect. I only knew him through the characters and personalities in his martial arts novels.
- Chua Lam: The “lovably irreverent old master.” Loved him dearly—his carefree attitude towards worldly conventions aligned so closely with what I aspire to. Yet he could live it out, while I still can’t.
- James Wong (Wong Jim): The songs he wrote and the words he spoke were brimming with immense culture—his phrasing and eloquence were impeccable, truly a living treasure of Chinese culture.
- Ni Kuang: The only one I didn’t know as well.
